My ONE Advice for YOU Today

Sometimes I find myself saying the same things over and over
This month has been one of those months
Yes I have LOVED mentoring my 1:1 clients
BUT
EVERY one of them – at some stage
I have said the same thing to…
==>> Start from where you are at!!
“I’m not experienced at programming”
Start from where you are at!
“I’m not comfortable with this age group”
Start from where you are at!
“I’ just don’t like Critical Reflection”
Start from where you are at!
“I can’t think of Follow Ups,
how do educators think of follow ups?”
Start from where you are at!
“My programming time was taken this week,
I can’t program with no time”
Start from where you are at!
“Follow ups just don’t work for me”
Start from where you are at!
“I can’t think of experiences for this age group”
Start from where you are at!
These are all from this month
They are all real fears from beautiful educators
We are all in the same boat
Fears come up when we least expect them
Questions that niggle away at us
We need to question
We need to brainstorm
We need to put time and energy into growing and taking the next step
If we are going to move forward
At some stage
We NEED to silence the fear
To move past the fear
And YES one of my favourite sayings
That is part of my inner voice
==>> Feel the fear and do it anyway
Our Children are depending on us
They rely on us, to find a solution
To acknowledge the fear, the nagging voice,
the questioning or dislike that we are recognising
AND do it anyway
YOU really can…
Start from where you are at!

If YOU Don’t Step Up => They Miss Out…

A clear true statement that came to me as I hung up from a call
It hit me like a ton of bricks
When I am so certain of something
It takes my breath away
This is one of those REAL moments
When my inner voice shouts at me
To STOP
To think for an extra minute
Not to – just keep pushing on
STOP
BREATH
Take note of what my inner voice is feeling
If YOU don’t step up => They miss out…
The precious children we work with
ARE counting on us
They NEED us to step up
To offer them the best we can offer
Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators
BE
Creative, caring and positive
Encouraging, engaging and guiding
Kind, understanding, true, real and trustworthy
I love the educators I work with
They are stepping up
They are recognising they need help
They are moving themselves forward one step at a time
Children are with us for such a short snippet of time
It is up to early childhood educators to recognise
the difference they are making – to know it – to own it
My call was with a beautiful educator
She was nervous, unsure and questioning her role as an educator
She had a list of reasons why…
WHY she couldn’t be the educator she wanted to be

Let me share HER list with you
> She was too inexperienced
> Not confident around the children that age
> Was expected to guide the other educators in her room
> Had missed her programming time
Now she also shared with me
> Her love for the children
> Her goals and struggles,
how hard she had worked to become an educator,
her determination and strength
> The way she loves interacting and encouraging the children
> Her excitement to see the children interested in new projects and
random wonderful things they may do for the day
NOW
It is clear
She loves being an educator
And after reading her list I have some questions for YOU…
> How experienced is ‘experienced enough’ to make a difference?
> How do you become confident around children of any age
but to spend time with them?
> Can you guide and support others by being a shinning example?
> If you are taking clear notes, and following the children’s interests,
know their strengths, have a clear cycle;
can you keep going with caring for the children?
NOW is the time for her to step up
To recognise she is making a difference
The children in our care
May only be with us…
A few months – A term – A year or A few years
Any way we look at it, time is IMPORTANT, they will NOT get it back!!
What are your choices??
HOW long will you WAIT –
without offering the children valuable experiences –
because you are waiting for someone more experienced to come along?
HOW long will you WAIT –
to become more confident?
HOW long will you WAIT –
when will you be ready to interact and guide others,
be the shinning example you could be now?
HOW long will you WAIT –
will you get your programming time?
OR
TAKE ACTION – Do what you know now and the rest will come
TAKE ACTION – Find someone to bounce ideas off and support you
TAKE ACTION – Do what you can now
TAKE ACTION – Take notes, offer value and
make your program a true cycle.
So many educators, beautiful educators spend too much time…
Questioning what you are doing
Doubting your own ability
Criticising yourselves and others around you
It’s time to step up
If YOU don’t step up => They miss out…

Connection and Community

Connection
How important is it to you?
Do you program for it?
Tricky, Tricky subject – Or is it?
How do you build connection within your care setting,
between your children, family’s, educators and community?
Building connections within our care setting needs…
Non Bias thinking
Critical Reflection
Brain storming
Time and often Energy
Motivation and Direction
All things that often educators struggle with…
All things that often get seen as too hard…
All things that often get left to last!!
We know in our heads AND heart this is important stuff
BUT
Sometimes
Just sometimes
the want to program and implement IS there
BUT the practicality of where to start is just too much
Let me give you some food for thought
Let me give you a few challenges
AND
Let me break it down a little
If we break down connection into smaller workable pieces
Important pieces
that can be immersed into our ongoing program and practice
Not something that is focused on for a single day, month or term
But truly ongoing, real and meaningful experiences.
Our precious children can be offered the invitation to explore,
gain meaning from and learn these much needed feelings and skills.
Our Belonging Being Becoming steps us into smaller steps already
And Connection around Community, family and environment steps again
Connection to community helps build emotional resilience
But it is an area that many see as just too hard
Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators
Think for a minute
Critical Reflect on your own practice
>> Is connection to community something you focus on for a week
and then forget about?
>> Is it something you program for a month and tick off as done?
>> Are excursions a no go for you so you focus on other things?
There are so many amazing ways to build
children’s connection to community
To build trust and understanding
Our precious children need to truly feel and know they belong
>> What are you doing in your care setting to build these connection?
>> Are you brainstorming with other educators?
>> How are these vital skills and connections being nurtured?
>> Are your children learning they are part of an
amazing community and world?
All these things start with us as educators
Being enthused
Being motivated
Being the educator that has creative ideas to bring the
community into our care settings
NOT relying on occasional excursions
NOT relying on the next educator to come up with ideas
NOT passing the buck because we aren’t experienced enough
NOW
YES NOW
NOW is the time to start building a connection to your community with your children
3
SUPER
EASY
things you can do TODAY…
>> 1 Take Photos of local landmarks/ buildings to hang up
when you offer blocks
(Half a minute on your way to work OR on your way to shopping next)
>> 2 Create story stones with the local schools on them
(Are you curious to see what the children will do with them?)
>> 3 Take photos of parents at drop off, print them twice
and you have created a matching game the children will love.
How many more can you think of… We have hundreds –
Yes literally hundreds.
You don’t need excursions to bring the community in and
form a connection
Although lovely, fun and great to offer,
so many care settings are unable
or unwilling to offer excursions.
Don’t let this stop you
It is way, WAY too important
Share what YOU offer around connection and community…
Share your next great idea!!

Stress About Next Year…

Don’t let the What ifs in your life destroy the now…
What about the NOW?
I have been listening to an educators what if’s today
Trying to be respectful
Trying to be thoughtful and understanding
Then I asked her…
But what if it all works out? EXACTLY how you want it to?
If you have been an educator for a while
You will know how much everything can change from year to year
At the start of a new year
The children all do a little shuffle
The vibe of what works and what doesn’t shuffles
AND the systems we use
NEED to shuffle a little too
It’s OK to make changes as you go
It’s OK >> although honestly sometimes heartbreaking >>
for children to move on
It’s OK and NEEDED for you to recognise what will work for you…
This time of year I hear from educators that have concerns
A real level of STRESS about next year
Children are changing
Families are changing
Thoughts on increasing or decreasing hours
Changing of days
And debates over fees too
ALL these are quite normal
And happen every year
Some years ARE harder than others
Some times a heck of a lot of effort, communication,
negotiations are needed
AND other years it just all falls into place
Keep your eye on the prize
A year that will work for you
DECIDE what days YOU want to work
DECIDE what times will be ideal
DECIDE on changes to your fees
Check out Simple Reflect – The latest documenting tool for Educators
AND START
Start negotiating
Start taking ACTION
DON’T leave it to the last minute
Be ready for it to take some time
Effort and skill
But what if it all works out? EXACTLY how you want it to?
Enjoy the NOW!!
There are still months until the end of the year
YES actions > discussions > planning > negotiation is needed now
BUT don’t be CONSUMED by the stress
Enjoy the NOW
> enjoy your days
> enjoy the children
> enjoy being an educator,
knowing you are making a difference to the lives of your children,
their families and the community you are a part of
Relax and trust YOU have the skill to make it all work…
