What Does It Mean to Shine??

What does it mean to YOU?
I’ve been flat this week
Struggling to find the energy
It’s the end of the year and I am ready for a break
For some time – time for my son, my husband, time for me
But I say to myself
I say to YOU
We still need to shine
What makes YOU the educator you are today?
Why do I say to educators
“Remember to Shine”?
“Shine as an Educator”!!

YOU have precious children
that NEED what YOU have to give…
Support them
Nurture them
Engage them
Snuggle and comfort them
Challenge them
Guide them
Let them know – our precious children –
that YOU are a trustworthy person
A beautiful early childhood educator that
WANTS to spend time, earning children’s trust…
WE need to earn children’s trust &
WE need to hold a safe space for them EVERY time they are with us!
I am an Early Childhood Educators and this is my commitment!!
Be the shining – stable – predictable – wonderful EDUCATOR
The one the children know – trust – NEED
When everything is crazy at this time of year
BE the educator with a smile
BE the educator with the laugh
BE the educator with the compassion – love – caring – joy
I beg you to be the educator the children desperately need you to be…

The Best Educator?

It is YOUR decision…
Have you made the decision?
The decision to be the best educator YOU can be??
Each year I challenge myself…
Challenge myself to be the best educator I can be
To each of us,
the best educator,
means something completely different
As I grow each year as an educator
As I reflect on my practice
As I become more experienced and the world changes
As my children grow and my families need adjust
The best educator
The best me, WILL be different from last year
Each year in January
I take a little time to reflect on the year as a whole
Yes what worked and what didn’t
It is more than that
It is how I can better serve the children and families in my care
Moving forward, how has this changed?
What will work for me as an educator??
What needs to be added or subtracted from
EVERY PART of me being an educator?? ?
Nothing is off the table
If I want to be happy, energised, motivated during the year coming,
this is the step not to miss
You can only be the best educator YOU can be IF you DECIDE
how you want your year to be AND take action to make it that way

NOW is the time to be ruthless
Are there new routines needed?
Do I need to focus on connection with my new children?
Were there parts of my day that just didn’t flow?
Does my environment need changing or a spruce up?
Are there resources I used last year that I don’t want to use again?
Do I need new or more age appropriate experiences?
Is my programming seamless and enjoyable?
Do my systems work for me?
Am I staying up to date with my paper work requirements?
Did I reflect as an educator in an effective way?
Am I keeping up with my children’s interests and learning needs?
How am I growing and developing as an educator?
These are the types of questions that are invaluable for
kicking of the year on the right foot AND celebrating
what worked and taking action to change what didn’t
AS WELL AS asking myself on point questions
Bellow are my must do tasks for the first week back…
>> Set up a calendar for the year – include school holidays
AND our holidays… for the whole year
>> Confirm any enrolments, advertise outstanding vacancies
>> Check enrolment details for all families are current
>> Update any new contracts
>> Confirm there are NO outstanding fees
>> Continue an ongoing programming cycle…
Yes educators often get out of the habit over
Christmas or leave it a week or two after to get back into it,
regrettably starting off the year needing to catch up.
Avoid this at all cost by kicking back into it on your first day.
It sounds like a lot
If you had a system that worked well last year
the above tasks should take no time at all
Being an educator can be easy, can be fun, motivating and fulfilling!
YES it takes focus, systems, determination and the
DECISION to stay organised and up to date…
why not start fresh at the start of the year
It is time to start now!!

Supporting Creativity, Supporting Choice :)

Yesterday I offered the children Christmas tree craft
Pre-cut trees, Green paint, Stars and sequins
I tried to be a little more mainstream
NOT often how I program
You know
Offer the children preplanned pieces for them
to create Christmas trees to take home…
Or was it?

The children chatted about the trees,
about presents they want under the tree,
what they were planning to give others –
a great opportunity to support conversation,
social skills, recall and expressing their feelings
Half way through beautiful Miss E shared
she would RATHER paint her feet then the tree…
Let’s leave the trees
‘What colour would you like to paint your feet?’ I asked
So we did
Huge pieces of paper
Red and Green Paint
The children painting their own feet
Using their feet as stamps
Stomping and hopping
Can you imagine the splatter, the mess, but gee we had fun

Child focused
Child creativity
We now have 4 big pieces of paper to send home as wrapping paper
And we may even finish our trees today if the children WANT to

I had chosen NOT to program any craft this year around foot prints
The children just hadn’t shown any interest
in painting themselves like last year…
But here is the interest,
showing up
presented and supported yesterday as it came up

Do They Really Matter?

One Decision
Each decision
Every decision we make while, supporting, guiding, loving
our precious children MATTERS
They do matter
AND they matter now!!
I have been reading about making choices,
how much decisions matter to adults
and – as it always does –
my thinking went straight to our children
We make choices every day
We make decisions that effect the wellbeing,
development and learning of our children
Do we take it seriously
Seriously enough?
I would like to say yes
THIS is WHY we are educators
Conscious early childhood educators
BUT sadly I know sometimes the answer is NO
So I will share my thoughts again
The decisions we make EACH and EVERY day
with our children
for our children

You question what you are doing for the day?
You question why you are doing what you are doing?
You question your methods
the importance of trying again when something goes wrong…
AND there will always be questions
there will always be times we ask why?
WE work with children there are always things that don’t go quite to plan!
Know that what you DO next MATTERS
The choices YOU make to keep going
follow up with something exciting
encourage resilience
a kind reassuring word
stop for a snuggle
It IS a choice
and as educators we make these choices
every single minute of every single day
What choices have you made today

Do you need to take a second look?
How can you serve YOUR children you care for?
Serve them through the choices YOU are making
Knowing that what you choose DOES matter
